Because We Could All Use a Good Laugh: Life with a Car Enthusiast

Being married to a car enthusiast has given me more stories than I could ever count.

Seriously, I could probably fill a book.

One of my favorites goes all the way back to the early 2000s, when Scott and I were living in a condo in Phoenix.

We didn’t have a garage.

That did not stop Scott from accumulating tools.

At some point, he bought a small Craftsman rolling toolbox and mounted a vise on top of it.

And because we had no garage, where did we keep this lovely automotive setup?

In the kitchen.

Of course we did. 😂

One day, Scott was outside in the driveway working on the car. I don’t remember exactly what he was trying to loosen, but whatever it was, it was stuck.

Really stuck.

He needed to use the vise, but there was one small problem.

The toolbox was on wheels.

And the driveway had a slope.

Every time he tried to put pressure on whatever he was working on, the toolbox moved.

After fighting with it for a while, he came inside and asked me for help.

His solution?

“Honey, can you come sit on the toolbox so it won’t move?”

Now, let me paint this picture for you.

I’m short.

I was much younger, but I was still very much overweight.

And this toolbox was high enough that Scott actually had to bring me a step stool so I could climb up onto it.

That should have been our first clue. 😂

I climbed up, sat kitty-corner on the toolbox, and basically straddled the vise so I could hold onto it.

And almost the second I got settled, we both realized this may not have been one of our better ideas.

The toolbox started rolling.

Not wobbling.

Not inching forward.

Rolling.

Down the slanted driveway.

With me sitting on top of it.

Scott started running alongside me, laughing the entire time while also trying to figure out how to stop his wife from making a grand entrance into the street.

I was laughing.

He was laughing.

Neither one of us was particularly helpful at that point.

Thankfully, he managed to get in front of the toolbox just as I reached the flat part at the end of the driveway.

We laughed so hard afterward that I’m pretty sure whatever repair he had been working on stopped mattering for a while.

And this, my friends, is what life with a car guy can look like.

No garage?

No problem.

Apparently, all you need is a rolling toolbox, a step stool, a slanted driveway, and a wife willing to participate in questionable experiments.

That story happened more than twenty years ago, and it still makes me laugh.

And trust me...

We have sooooo many stories. 😂

Maybe I really should write that book someday.

For now, I’ll just keep sharing them one at a time. 🌻
