God Got to My Husband First
❤️ New to the story? Start with Part 1: I Was Angry With God.
My Faith Story — Part 2
If you read Part 1, you know there was a point in my life when I was angry with God. Really angry. I hadn't stopped believing He existed. I just wasn't convinced He was everything people said He was.
So when I met Scott, there was actually something about him that appealed to me: He wasn't a Christian. Perfect. 😂
I wasn't looking for someone to bring me back to God. I wasn't looking for a church. And I definitely wasn't looking for someone to talk to me about my faith. Apparently God wasn't terribly concerned about my plans.
Scott and I got married in August, and not long afterward we bought a house in Alton, New Hampshire. About two weeks after we moved in, Scott lost his job.
And our new neighbor? A Nazarene pastor. Because of course he was. 😂
While Scott was out of work, our neighbor would come over during the day and the two of them would shoot pool. I didn't think much of it until one day, while I was at work, Scott called me.
He had accepted Jesus.
You might expect this to be the part where I tell you I cried happy tears and thanked God. Nope. I was furious.
I had already told Scott what I thought about Christianity. I thought the whole thing was basically a farce. Why was he doing this?
But Scott started going to church. I didn't.
Eventually, I went to a Christmas program there. I sat in the back pew, and something happened that I wasn't expecting.
I cried. And cried. And cried.
I couldn't have explained it then. I wasn't suddenly ready to forget everything that had happened or pretend all my questions were answered. They weren't.
But looking back, I can see something now that I couldn't see sitting in that back pew: God hadn't walked away from me just because I was angry with Him.
I had spent years questioning Him, avoiding church, and deciding what I believed about Him based on things that had happened in my life. And while I was busy wanting nothing to do with Christianity, God started working through the last person I expected.
My husband.
I wasn't back yet. Not even close. Sitting in that back pew wasn't the end of my anger with God, and it definitely wasn't the beginning of some neat little happily-ever-after Christian story.
There was still a lot ahead of us. More churches. More disappointment. More questions. Some experiences that would eventually make me walk away from church altogether.
But something had started changing.
God was getting my attention. And apparently, He knew exactly how to do it. ❤️
This story is far from over.
I'll share Part 3 soon. 🙏
